Corn Seed

Corn Seeds. Fresh corn from the home garden is one of those WOW! experiences. Once picked, corn starts losing its taste qualities to such an extent that I have read of some folks even have water boiling before they venture out to pick it. Fresh is best but I have never had it that fresh other than eating it raw while picking ( though the health experts warn against this so I do too).
Corn does not like frost nor cool soil. I have seen corn planted a month later than corn planted one week after the last frost catch up with the earlier. They say to plant seed 1-2 weeks after the last frost but my experience says 2-4 weeks is about the same ( unless perhaps you are in a short growing season zone and pushing the edge with maturity dates versus frost free days).
Corn presents several problems for the small home gardener. Seeds should be planted 1 inch deep, 6 inches apart and with at least a 2 foot row spacing. Add to this that there should be at least 4 rows for proper pollination and you can see that it adds up to quite a bit of space.
The pic below is Golden Bantam Improved that was grown in one of our square foot beds with 4 stalks per square. This creates a bit of a problem as they grow tall and can not easily be "hilled" as regular field/row grown corn but there are a lot of smart folks in the backyard and a problem is but something to be solved. These made it through OK as they are shorter plants than most but the Truckers Favorite was blown down.
There are many resourceful folks in the backyard with very good ideas. One that I saw was a mesh screen supported 2 feet above ground that the corn is guided through for support. This is one idea that we will try Spring 2009 with concrete reinforcing wire. A 4 foot by 4 foot bed planted with 4 stalks per square would be 64 plants each with the potential of two ears. Now, in my book, 128 ears of corn from a 4x4 area is worth further effort.
